Avalanche forecasting for the Fiordland region has ended for the 2025 season. Although avalanche forecasting has concluded, practising general avalanche safety and awareness is essential for anyone venturing into the backcountry.    For current information on snowpack conditions in the Southern Alps view the  Aoraki/Mt Cook avalanche forecasts, which are your best point of reference for general mountain conditions.      Thank you for supporting the NZ Avalanche Advisory!

Large scale wet loose sluffing in Northern Fiordland. 30 Oct- Widespread loose wet activity in Northern Fiordland during warm temperatures in the afternoon. This was the first sunny day since Thur 23rd 23rd Oct - Some evidence of avalanching on the cliff bands during the 22nd Oct storm, but nothing big to valley floor observed. (Northern Fiordland). Reports of some large avalanches to valley floor in Northern Fiordland on Monday 20th October. Soft snow conditions are expected, but conditions change quickly, taking ice axe and crampons is recommended.

26 Nov- The snowpack has shrunk a lot in the last 2 weeks. A steady, high freezing level and some heavy rain running through the snowpack has left it stable and well consolidated. The snow line is rising to about 1500/1600m on northerly aspects. The southerly aspects and basin are still holding a lot of snow, with the snow line being about 1300/1400m.  18 Nov - about 100m of rain with a 2400m FAFL.
